Buproprion HCl
Seizure Risk: Bupropion is associated with a dose-dependent risk of seizures. This risk is higher in individuals with certain predisposing factors, such as a history of seizures, eating disorders (e.g., bulimia or anorexia nervosa), abrupt discontinuation of alcohol or sedatives, or use of other drugs that lower the seizure threshold.
Neuropsychiatric Symptoms: There is a risk of neuropsychiatric symptoms, including mood changes, depression, and suicidal ideation, particularly in individuals using it for smoking cessation. Close monitoring is recommended.
Hypertension: Bupropion may cause elevated blood pressure, especially when combined with nicotine replacement therapy. Blood pressure should be monitored regularly.
Seizure Disorders: Contraindicated in patients with a history of seizures or conditions that increase the risk of seizures.
Eating Disorders: Contraindicated in patients with bulimia or anorexia nervosa due to the increased risk of seizures.
MAO Inhibitors: Contraindicated in patients currently taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or within 14 days of discontinuing an MAOI due to the risk of hypertensive reactions.
Phentermine HCl
Cardiovascular Risks: Phentermine can cause increases in heart rate and blood pressure and is associated with a risk of serious cardiovascular events, including heart valve disorders and pulmonary hypertension.
Central Nervous System Effects: It may cause nervousness, insomnia, dizziness, and tremors. It can also impair the ability to perform tasks requiring alertness, such as driving.
Potential for Abuse: Phentermine has a potential for abuse and dependence due to its stimulant effects, similar to amphetamines.
Cardiovascular Disease: Contraindicated in patients with a history of cardiovascular disease, including uncontrolled hypertension, coronary artery disease, and arrhythmias.
Hyperthyroidism: Contraindicated in patients with hyperthyroidism due to the risk of exacerbating the condition.
Glaucoma: Contraindicated in patients with glaucoma as it can increase intraocular pressure.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Contraindicated during pregnancy due to potential harm to the fetus and should not be used by breastfeeding mothers.
Topiramate
Cognitive and Psychiatric Effects: Topiramate may cause cognitive impairment, such as difficulties with concentration, memory, and speech. Psychiatric symptoms, including depression and mood changes, may also occur.
Metabolic Acidosis: Topiramate can cause metabolic acidosis, which may result in renal stones or bone demineralization. Regular monitoring of serum bicarbonate levels is recommended.
Hyperammonemia and Encephalopathy: There is a risk of elevated ammonia levels, which can lead to encephalopathy, especially in patients with pre-existing liver disease or those taking valproic acid.
